New Wave Mental Maths is an excellent workbook that can be used daily to reinforce maths concepts. The children benefit from the daily practice as it focuses on and revises key concepts and skills in all strands. The tasks get more challenging as the year progresses and thus enables the teacher to identify areas that need further attention. The children enjoy the daily practice and become increasingly confident in their work as they can see their progress and gain more practice in Key areas. An excellent workbook that should be in all schools !!!!

by Múinteoir Valerie on New Wave English in Practice

I have been using Prim Ed’s New Wave English in Practice since I started teaching full time. I used the series with 5th and 6th and then this year with 1st and 2nd. I would recommend this series for homework more so than class work. Below you will find a full outline of the series. I like it because the children are familiar with the series in our school from 1st class all the way up to 6th so the format is the same, which makes it easier for both students and the class teacher. I like how the series covers all aspects of English, from spelling to vocabulary , grammar and punctuation.

For 1st and 2nd it comprises of 10 short questions per night which is perfect as it is not too long. The questions are similar from page to page so it enables the children to revise and build on their prior knowledge. There are revision days at the back too which will be useful for the final month of term.

It is a six-book English programme of pupil books for 1st to 6th Class pupils.

Content:

The wide and varied range of content in each pupil book focuses broadly on:

spelling
vocabulary and word study
grammar and punctuation
The content targets a wide range of English language structures and concepts within these broad areas and the emphasis is on providing children with daily practice using a concise question format. Repetition and revision help to consolidate the children’s learning.

Like their maths’ counterparts, these books recognise, and take full advantage of, the value of incidental teaching and learning. Teachers will welcome the focus on the common problem areas of the English language throughout the series. They will also appreciate how these books address different strands and objectives of the English curriculum in a concise and direct way. The emphasis on practice, repetition and revision will help children acquire and strengthen the skills they need to be competent and confident in their use of English.

Structure:

Each book comprises 15 units with 10 individual day’s work in each unit. The days are labelled using a numbered format allowing teachers to use the book flexibly and to suit their own teaching style. Revision units are placed at the back of each book. The revision units revise the content, concepts and question type of each unit and are useful for assessment purposes at regular intervals. Alternatively, these units could be used at the end of the year to revise all the content that has been covered. Pupil record sheets have been included in each book to help children record and monitor their own progress.

by Gabrielle Healy on New Wave Pre-Writing Patterns

New wave Pre-writing patterns is a simple and fun workbook for teaching the basic skills necessary for beginning handwriting. It goes through six basic movements that are necessary for children to learn as they begin their journey to handwriting. I would highly recommend this book AND the A3 Write On posters. I had a lend of the posters this year and they were highly popular, even at Aistear time! If you are buying the book, buy the posters!

This is a book which is appealing both in appearance and content and one which we will be buying for our school rental scheme.

by Anseo.net on Handwriting Today

The Handwriting Today series is made up of four pupil workbooks A-D. With the new writing language curriculum ready to enfold itself upon Irish primary classrooms, teachers will need to take a look at their current handwriting pedagogy. The great news is that most of the work has been done for the teacher who wants to use a workbook! It follows a well-researched approach to teaching handwriting by using cursive writing from the beginning. The teacher’s handbook that accompanies each workbook explains the research in detail.

In Book A, we have some pre-writing activities followed by two pages for each letter divided into anticlockwise, clockwise and downstroke letters. There is also a good section of numbers, review and assessment checklist. Each Book builds on the last in terms of skills and development.

I always think that the workbook is never enough for a teacher and does not satisfy the need to differentiate for abilities in a teacher’s class. Prim-Ed have designed a Handwriting Today:Let’s join in! CD-Rom for use with projected screen/IWB to help differentiate further. In this CD-ROM, the teacher can provide opportunities to create differentiated worksheets. The teacher can change line size, stroke size and design as well. It compliments the workbooks but is sold separately. Another of its handy options is that the teacher can leave an animation of a chosen letter on the projected screen while she observes the children’s writing. Children can look up and remember without the teacher having to go back and forth to the board to demonstrate.

Handwriting is proving to be a vital component of any good language programme with links to spelling and reading becoming evident. Cursive writing has been found to have many unique benefits to printing letters. It reinforces the need for a child to be fluid and legible as does this Prim-Ed programme. It comes recommended by spelling and handwriting life-time researcher, Brendan Culligan as an excellent resource to have. Prim-Ed have a downloadable, free teacher handbook to accompany each level in the series.

Teachers will need to work on a fine motor skills programme before and during the use of the Handwriting Today programme but that would be the same for any handwriting programme.

My spelling workbook is a fantastic scheme that challenges students at an age appropriate level and always include high frequency words on the list. The teachers resource book has dictation for every unit and alternative weeks spelling and dictation has really improved children's spelling.

My Spelling Workbook

We have recently introduced My Spelling Workbook on a school wide basis. We find that the layout, the use of colour and the activities appeal to the children. Many of the activities really challenge the children. As the book is used throughout the school, children are familiar with it from year to year, and thereby have increased confidence in themselves while using it. We will be continuing to use this book for the foreseeable future.

I use New Wave Mental Maths with 5th and 6th classes. I provides great opportunities to pre teach topics and revise others. The activities become increasingly more difficult as the year progresses. It is great as a revision tool also.

New wave mental maths, I love this series of books, good range of questions for children and they get harder as the year goes on. Children enjoy doing the daily tasks. Great for problem solving! Would be great if you had an interactive aspect to accompany the series of books where children could work in small groups at the board to extend their problem solving ability.
